Robust and Timely Data
We have assembled data on a range of topics related to agriculture and climate change in Sub-Saharan Africa as a resource for approaching adaptation projects. This includes data and projections on climate change impacts, economic risks, adaptive capacities, effective adaptation practices and strategies, investment returns, and more. This rich source of insights can help create actionable decision-making support for investment design, policy formulation, development programming, and other use cases related to adaptation in agriculture.

How People Are Using Our Data
Our data has helped many organizations further their work, such as the IUCN, World Bank, United States Department of Agriculture, IFPRI, IITA, Kenyan Ministry of Agriculture, CGIAR, and Alliance of Bioversity-CIAT.
NGOs, researchers, governments, international finance institutions, and other groups are using the Atlas data in many ways, including:
- Developing clear reasoning and justification to shape Green Climate Fund proposals. Case study
- Generating key economic performance indicators to support investor decisions. Case study
- Outlining adaptation rationale and response options in four African countries. Case study
- Formulating evidence-based climate change response plans. Case study
- Supporting projections of climate risks and adaptation benefits for prioritizing research. Case study
A Collaborative Platform for Our Data and Yours
Building effective adaptation solutions is a collaborative process, and making data usable for more stakeholders can expedite and amplify those efforts. This is why we have utilized Observable, a collaborative platform for data exploration and visualization, to build a growing collection of tools for visually exploring our data, and to facilitate stakeholders in building tools for the collection using their own data. This is a community effort aimed at supporting people working in all aspects of adaptation agriculture. Have an idea or need for a specific data tool that can bring information to a key decision? Reach out for support or follow our Guidelines to:
- Use our data to create new tools
- Duplicate and modify our existing tools
- Use new data to create new tools
Do you have data that could complement the Atlas but need help putting your data into practice? Our team might be able to help. Let us know and we can discuss incorporating it into the Atlas.
Access the Data
We encourage the use of our data and data visualizations in your work. Data used throughout the Atlas is available through our online SpatioTemporal Asset Catalog (STAC). Download part or all based on your needs. We also created The Explore the Datasets Observable Notebook (Coming soon) to provide access to key data layers from the Adaptation Atlas site and suite of notebooks. In most notebooks, data used for specific visualizations can be downloaded directly from the Observable page in the top right of the browser window (look for the paperclip ‘file attachments’). Data sources and methodology vary between notebooks and detailed information (with links to Github with our code) can be found in the Methods & Sources at the end of the notebooks.
